This week we will be discussing Noah & God's Promise.  The bible story talks about Noah building the ark and bringing the animals on during the flood.  We will be focusing on the promise God made to not flood Earth again and the rainbow that He made.  The art project today will be a rainbow using fruit loops and cotton balls.  We will be reading the story: What Makes A Rainbow? by Betty Schwartz.

During centers, we will be continuing our work on cutting.  This is in preparation for next year.  We will also work on identifying numbers and tracing them.  The sensory table will be open for exploration.

UPCOMING ACTIVITIES:

Please be aware that next week is WATER WEEK!  The kids will need to bring their swim suits, towels, and extra clothing (including a swim diaper, if needed).  You will need to apply sunscreen at home, as we are not allowed to here.

The last week is our END OF THE YEAR PICNIC!  We will be eating outside (weather permitting) and will be playing quite a bit outside.  Please apply sunscreen.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

My apologies for not blogging last week.  Just a quick summary of what we completed last week.  Our bible story and art project was Jesus Calms the Storm.  We discussed how we must have faith in Jesus even when life seems difficult.  We also had a chance to practice a fire drill and tornado drill during school.  Last week we were able to practice our songs down in the FLC, where we will be performing.  Please let me know if you are needing the lyrics for the songs.

This week we will be reading The Lost Sheep.  It tells about the parable of a shepherd who has the responsibility to provide and protect all of his sheep.  If one is lost, he goes in search of the lost one until it is found and returned.  This is how God feels about His people.  We will be making a lost sheep in art.  We will also be working on our numbers 1-10 by sorting.

Our sharing friends for this week are:

Today we are continuing our Easter celebration with discussions on the Last Supper up until the Resurrection. The bible story this week is Jesus is Risen!  To follow along with the Easter theme, we will be making a bunny craft with egg cartons, pom poms and googly eyes.  They will also be making stained glass eggs using tissue paper and clear contact paper.

They will also be identifying the number 1-10 during centers.  We have matching and counting activities for them to work with.  We will be working on our songs for the graduation ceremonies set for April 26th.  Those songs are: 5 Little Monkeys, Happy & You Know It, and Be Careful Little Eyes.  Have them sing to you at home, to help them prepare.  If you need the words to any of these songs, I can try to download and e-mail them to you.  Just let me know.

Please make sure to return those eggs this week, as we will be having our Easter egg hunt during recess!

Spring is in the air!  I do hope you had a wonderful Spring Break (even with the rain).  I look forward to hearing what everyone did for fun!  We are beginning our Easter celebration and will be discussing Passover this week.  The bible story is The Ten Plagues which talks about how God had Moses go to the pharaoh to let the Israelites go.  When the pharaoh would not listen, God sent a new plague onto Egypt.  This happened 10 times until finally the pharaoh told the Israelites to leave.  To go along with this theme, we will be making frogs (like one of the plagues) during art.  The kids will be using paper plates, cotton balls, other supplies to make them.  We will also be working on tracing our names.

We will also be sending home plastic eggs for you to fill with goodies.  These will need to be brought back the following week so we can do an easter egg hunt with your children.  The filling does not need to be candy, just anything that can fit in the eggs and is safe.

This week we will be talking about land and the animals who live on it.  The bible story is The Burning Bush.  This passage talks about Moses escaping the pharaoh and becoming a shepherd.  God appeared to him in a burning bush and told him to save the Israelites and take them to a new land called Canaan.  God planned on using signs to show the pharaoh He had given the message to let His people go.

During centers we will be making shamrocks to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.  This will include the use of a bell pepper and some green paint.  An easy and fun activity for the kids.  We will also be practicing cutting and writing our names.
During art, we will be making caterpillars, in preparation for our caterpillars to arrive at the school.  This project will include using egg cartons, paint and a lot of imagination!

The unit this week is Light (Day and Night).  The bible story that works with this unit is Genesis 1: The Beginning.  This lesson discusses how the world and everything in it was created by God.  Starting this week the students are focusing on identifying and spelling their names.  We will be making a Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom tree with their name.  I look forward to working with each child on learning to spell their names and will have some fun activities planned.  This will be something we will continue to work on the rest of the school year.  We will also be working on perfecting our cutting skills.  Our new scissors will help teach them the proper technique by springing back open.  Can't wait to try them out!!

Mrs. Kai

This week we are talking about dental health.  We will discuss the importance of brushing your teeth twice a day as well as flossing.  Dr. Walker from Family and Implant Dentistry has donated a toothbrush, toothpaste, and flossers for each child.  During art, we will be making a mouth with marshmallow teeth.  And will finish this unit with 2 great books:  Bruce's Loose Tooth by Eileen Landay and a Scholastic book, Brush Brush Brush.

The bible story I chose for this week is about Zacchaeus. Since he was a short man, he had to climb a tree to see Jesus. Jesus saw him in the tree and asked him to come down so He could go to his house. The other people were not happy, as Zacchaeus was a tax collector and had cheated them. Zacchaeus was so happy Jesus chose him, that he promised to give back to the people he cheated.

This is the 2nd week of working on the alphabet.  We are working on having them identify each letter as well as identify the letter their names start with.  Each child will be working on a coloring project with their first letter.  There are a couple of worksheets coming home for the letters B & C.  These are just for you to practice and do not need to be sent back.

Blessings,
Mrs. Kai

Whew, Valentine's week was so fun!! I am so glad to get to spend time with your kids and celebrate these holidays. We are back on track and will be getting them ready to move up to the 3-4 class for the rest of the year. This week starts the alphabet unit. It is our goal to get them started on learning the letters in order and identify the letters in their name. Keep an eye out for fun activities with writing and learning their letters.
Our bible story for this week is Jesus Loves the Children.  We will talk about how Jesus wants everyone to be more like the children.  Our art project this week will be making "loving hands".  It will be a lot of fun using glue and glitter.  These will be displayed in our room.

The book we will be reading this week will be Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.  It is a great book to teach letters in a fun way.  We will be revolving our next few weeks around this book and will be doing more fun Chicka Chicka Boom Boom activities.  Keep your eye out for them.

Happy Valentine's Day!  We will be celebrating Valentine's this week.  Please make sure you decorated your box to bring to school this week.  We will be learning about the Fruit of the Spirit during bible time.  We will talk about how the fruit is a gift from God and how He is wanting us to use these "gifts" every day with others.  We will also be learning our last shape... Heart!  What a perfect week for the heart.  During art, we will be painting a heart with a mixture of shaving cream and glue.  It makes a puffy paint once dried.  These will be on display next week.  We will also be reading the book, Never Too Little to Love by Jeanne Willis and Jan Fearnley.  It is a cute book about a mouse who wants to give a kiss to a giraffe but is too small.  So he builds up items to reach her.

We will also be having quite a party for Valentine's Day.  We will be decorating a heart hat to wear during the party as well as have a fun craft during the party.  We will begin the afternoon watching an Alvin and the Chipmunks Valentine's movie and then finish off the day exchanging our Valentine's for everyone.                                     Don't forget we will be having a pizza party for lunch, so you will not need to pack a lunch.  Along with the pizza, we will have baby carrots, apple slices, and chocolate milk.  Yum!

First thing's first... please make sure to check your folders, as we will have a couple important notes for you.  Since next week in Valentine's Day, we will be celebrating the holiday with a pizza party... which means, no packed lunches!!!

This week, our unit is BE KIND.  The bible story teaches this beautifully with the good samaritan who helps the hurt man.  We will work on being kind to our friends and helping others who are in need.  Our story will also follow this unit.  We are reading, Have you Filled a Bucket Today?  A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids by Carol McCloud.  This book give a great explanation on how our behaviors toward others affects our happiness as well as our friends.  If you haven't read this book, you may want to.  I know many Kindergarten teachers who use it for their classes as well.

We will be learning about a STAR this week.  There will be a song that we will learn as well as coloring pages to work on.  I will also plan on sending home more star sheets for your child to continue working on that shape.

The first month of 2012 is almost over and we have been learning quite a bit. This week we will be discussing what is important in our lives. The bible story is about Mary & Martha. Jesus came to visit Mary & Martha and each woman chose to do different things. Mary wanted to listen to Jesus, while Martha made sure to have food prepared for Him. Martha was unhappy that Mary was not helping, but Jesus told Martha that Mary was doing the right thing... Putting Jesus First. Instead of worrying about what others are doing, we should do what Jesus wants us to do. During story time we will be learning about manners and listening. The books are Little Tiger is LOUD and Little Elephant's Listening Ears, both by Susan Hood.

Our shape for the week is an oval. We will find ovals around the room and talk about what ovals we may see each day. We, of course, will be learning a new song about the shape. Our art project this week will be decorating an oval. They will have a number of art supplies to make their oval beautiful. We will then display them for all to see.

We are rounding out the month with a wonderful unit, I Can Pray!  This week we will be talking about the importance of prayer...  when do you pray, do you ask for forgiveness, do you pray for others?  As always, we will practice praying before snack and lunch.  The children will learn The Lord's Prayer during Bible time.  During art, the children will be making a Prayer Rock.  This will be something they will bring home and it will help them to remember to pray each day.  Our story this week is also about the power of prayer...  The I Believe Bunny by Tish Rabe is a wonderful book about a bunny who is trying to help a mouse that fell into a river.  The bunny can't quite reach, so he prays for help to save the mouse... what happens next?  You'll have to ask your child :)

The shape of the week is a Trapezoid.  Do elephants stand on trapezoids in a circus?  What else does a trapezoid do?  During table time, the children will have an opportunity cut and color trapezoids.  And, of course, will be learning a song about the shape.

We are looking forward to more sharing time this week.  To finish the month of January, we have these children bringing something to share:
Tuesday: Madison and Conor
Wednesday: Jack and Logan
Thursday: Chloe and Claire

Our theme this week is Choose What's Right while learning about choices made in The Garden of Eden.  Our bible story will be discussing The Garden of Eden and how Adam and Eve made a bad choice by listening to the "sneaky snake" instead of following God's word.  During art, the kids will be making a sneaky snake by making a paper chain and will add eyes and a tongue.  We will then display them around the room.
The kids will learn about the Diamond shape, in circle time, and have the opportunity to make a paper kite using the diamond shape during table time.  They will also get time to try drawing and coloring diamonds with the color sheets.  We will also send sheets home for you to work on at home (no need to send them back).
Our story this week is, Hey, Little Ant by Phillip and Hannah Hoose and Debbie Tilley.  It will give the kids a look at the choice that a boy has to make by wanting to smash an ant.  They get to see how the ant has a family to feed and other responsibilities.  What do you think the boy should do?  What would you do?

Blessings,

What a great start to the new semester and 2012!  It was fun to see all your children again and to teach them about sharing with friends.  The first week of sharing time went well.  Please make sure to bring an item your child loves, so he/she will be excited to talk all about it.  This week's sharing friends are... Tues: Keaton & Alex; Wed: Katie & Luke; Thurs: Barron & Zach.
This week's unit is Help Our Friends.  Our bible story will follow this theme with "Jesus Helps The FIshermen".  After fishing for a long time and not catching anything, a man will tell them to where to cast their net and find the fish.  The fishermen will then know the man is Jesus and will see the importance of following Him.  For art, we will be making some rainbow fish with tissue paper and tin foil, as we follow Jesus.
The shape of the week is an Octagon and will get to paint a Stop sign.  We will also learn a new song, teaching the children about an octagon.  Story time will round out our helping friends theme with the book, My Friend Rabbit by Eric Rohmann.

Blessings,
Kai
